Key Takeaways

  • 1Online fulfillment starts with a valid prescription from a licensed provider after an evaluation.
  • 2A licensed pharmacy prepares, labels and ships the medication — often with cold packs for injectables.
  • 3Your label should list the pharmacy, prescriber, medication, strength and directions.
  • 4Refills usually require a check-in so your provider can confirm the dose is still right.

The four steps

1. Evaluation and prescription. A licensed provider reviews your health information through a telehealth assessment. If treatment is appropriate, they send a prescription to a licensed pharmacy. No legitimate pharmacy dispenses prescription medication without one.

2. Pharmacy verification and preparation. A pharmacist verifies the prescription, checks for interactions and prepares the medication. For compounded medications, a licensed compounding pharmacy prepares the dose for you as an individual patient.

3. Shipping. Medication ships to your address. Temperature-sensitive injectables such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are packed with insulated liners and cold packs. Refrigerate them as soon as they arrive.

4. Refills and follow-up. Before each refill, your care team checks how you're doing — progress, side effects, and whether your dose should change.

What your label should show

  • Pharmacy name, address and phone number
  • Prescriber's name
  • Your name
  • Medication, strength and quantity
  • Directions for use and storage
  • Beyond-use or expiration date

If any of these are missing, contact the pharmacy before using the medication.

Red flags

  • No prescription or medical questions required
  • Products labeled "for research use only"
  • No pharmacist you can contact
  • Shipping from outside the U.S.
