Medical weight loss, explained
Medical weight loss means a licensed provider evaluates your health, recommends treatment — often including a GLP-1 medication such as semaglutide or tirzepatide when appropriate — and monitors your progress and side effects over time.
Who qualifies
FDA labeling for weight-management GLP-1 medications covers adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. Your provider will also screen for reasons treatment may not be safe. Check eligibility.
In-person vs. online care in Queens
Queens has many in-person options, but appointments can mean travel and waiting. Telehealth from a New York-licensed provider offers:
- an online assessment you can complete from home in Astoria, Flushing, Jamaica, Forest Hills, Jackson Heights or anywhere in the borough;
- provider review, often within one to two days;
- medication shipped to your door in insulated packaging;
- messaging and check-ins as your dose is adjusted.
If your provider needs lab work, it can usually be done at a local lab.
What results to expect
In clinical trials with lifestyle changes, adults lost about 15% of body weight on average with semaglutide 2.4 mg over 68 weeks (STEP 1) and up to about 21% with tirzepatide 15 mg over 72 weeks (SURMOUNT-1). Individual results vary. How fast does GLP-1 weight loss happen?
