What "medical weight loss" means
Medical weight loss is weight management supervised by a licensed provider. A good program includes:
- a medical evaluation — history, BMI, medications and conditions;
- prescription treatment when appropriate, most often a GLP-1 medication;
- nutrition and activity guidance you can actually follow;
- monitoring of progress and side effects, with dose adjustments.
GLP-1 options available to Naples residents
- Semaglutide (the active ingredient in Wegovy and Ozempic). In the STEP 1 trial, average weight loss was about 15% at 68 weeks with lifestyle changes. How semaglutide works
- Tirzepatide (the active ingredient in Zepbound and Mounjaro), which acts on GLP-1 and GIP receptors. In the SURMOUNT-1 trial, average weight loss at the highest dose was about 21% at 72 weeks. How tirzepatide works
Results vary and medication isn't right for everyone. Compare semaglutide vs. tirzepatide.
Who qualifies?
FDA labeling for weight-management GLP-1s covers adults with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher with a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol. A provider will screen for reasons it may not be safe. Check eligibility.
In-clinic vs. telehealth in Southwest Florida
| | In-clinic program | Telehealth program | |---|---|---| | Visits | Scheduled office visits | Online assessment and messaging | | Travel | Drive to the office | None — medication ships to you | | Speed | Depends on appointment availability | Often reviewed within 1–2 days | | Best for | People who want in-person care or need exams | People who want convenience and flexibility |
Both can be safe and effective when a licensed provider is involved. Florida law allows licensed providers to evaluate and treat patients through telehealth.
