Key Takeaways

  • 1Ozempic and Wegovy both contain semaglutide; Ozempic is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes and Wegovy for chronic weight management.
  • 2For weight management, Wegovy's label covers adults with BMI ≥30, or ≥27 with a weight-related condition.
  • 3You need a prescription from a licensed provider — telehealth evaluations are an accepted route.
  • 4Insurance coverage for weight-loss use varies widely; cash-pay options exist.

Ozempic vs. Wegovy: same ingredient, different approvals

Both Ozempic and Wegovy contain semaglutide, a GLP-1 receptor agonist. The difference is what each one is FDA-approved for:

| | Ozempic | Wegovy | |---|---|---| | Approved use | Type 2 diabetes (blood sugar control, cardiovascular risk reduction) | Chronic weight management (and cardiovascular risk reduction in certain adults) | | Max weekly dose | 2 mg | 2.4 mg |

In the STEP 1 clinical trial, adults without diabetes taking semaglutide 2.4 mg weekly lost about 15% of body weight on average over 68 weeks, compared with about 2% on placebo, alongside lifestyle changes. Individual results vary.

Who qualifies for a weight-management prescription?

Wegovy's labeling for weight management covers adults with:

  • a BMI of 30 or higher, or
  • a BMI of 27 or higher with at least one weight-related condition (such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes or high cholesterol).

A provider will also check for reasons it may not be safe — for example a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, a history of pancreatitis, or pregnancy.

Step-by-step: getting a prescription

  1. Get evaluated by a licensed provider — your primary care doctor, an obesity-medicine specialist, or a telehealth provider licensed in your state.
  2. Share your health history, current medications and BMI. Labs may be requested.
  3. Discuss options. Depending on your history, your provider may recommend semaglutide, tirzepatide, another medication, or no medication.
  4. Check coverage and cost. Many insurance plans don't cover medication for weight loss; cash-pay prices vary by product.
  5. Start low, go slow. Doses are increased gradually to reduce side effects like nausea.

Telehealth as an option

Because GLP-1 medications are not controlled substances, a licensed provider can prescribe them after an online evaluation. At EdenRx, patients in Florida and New York complete a free assessment; our medical team under Dr. Jean-Yves Dastain, MD reviews it, usually within 24–48 hours, and you only pay if you're approved.

EdenRx programs use compounded semaglutide and compounded tirzepatide prepared by licensed U.S. pharmacies. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are not the same as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro or Zepbound. See current pricing and how semaglutide works.

Questions to ask before you start

  • Is this medication appropriate with my other conditions and medications?
  • What side effects should I expect, and when should I call you?
  • How will my dose be adjusted?
  • What happens if I stop?
