Key Takeaways

  • 1GLP-1 medications are not controlled substances, so a licensed provider can prescribe them after a telehealth evaluation without an in-person visit.
  • 2The provider must be licensed in the state where you are located at the time of the visit.
  • 3A legitimate program reviews your medical history, BMI and medications before prescribing — it should never be automatic.
  • 4FDA-approved options for weight management include Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide); compounded versions are not FDA-approved.

Short answer: yes

In most cases, a licensed medical provider can evaluate you and prescribe weight-loss medication through a secure telehealth visit. GLP-1 medications such as semaglutide and tirzepatide are not controlled substances, so federal rules that require an in-person exam for certain drugs don't apply to them. What does apply:

  • The provider must hold an active license in the state where you are physically located during the visit.
  • The provider must do a real clinical evaluation — not just collect payment.
  • The medication must be dispensed by a licensed pharmacy.

How an online evaluation works

A legitimate telehealth weight-loss program typically follows these steps:

  1. Health assessment. You answer questions about your weight history, current weight and height (to calculate BMI), medical conditions, medications, allergies and family history.
  2. Provider review. A licensed clinician reviews your answers and may ask follow-up questions or request recent lab work.
  3. Decision. If medication is appropriate and safe for you, the provider writes a prescription. If it isn't, you should be told why — and you shouldn't be charged for medication.
  4. Fulfillment. A licensed pharmacy prepares and ships the medication to you.
  5. Follow-up. Dosing is usually increased gradually, with regular check-ins about progress and side effects.

At EdenRx, every assessment is reviewed by our medical team under Dr. Jean-Yves Dastain, MD, who is licensed in Florida and New York. You only pay for treatment if you're approved. See how it works.

Who qualifies?

FDA labeling for GLP-1 medications approved for weight management (Wegovy and Zepbound) covers adults with:

  • a BMI of 30 or higher, or
  • a BMI of 27 or higher plus at least one weight-related condition, such as high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, high cholesterol or sleep apnea.

GLP-1 medications are not appropriate for everyone. They are generally not prescribed if you are pregnant or planning pregnancy, have a personal or family history of medullary thyroid cancer or MEN 2, or have a history of pancreatitis — your provider will review this with you. Check who qualifies.

Telehealth rules in Florida and New York

Florida recognizes telehealth in section 456.47 of the Florida Statutes. A licensed practitioner may evaluate and treat patients through telehealth, and the standard of care is the same as for an in-person visit. New York likewise allows telehealth, and the provider must be licensed in New York to treat a patient located there. In both states, the provider is responsible for a proper evaluation, accurate records and appropriate follow-up.

How to verify a provider

Before you start any online program, look up the prescriber:

  • Florida: use the Florida Department of Health license verification search.
  • New York: use the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions license search.

Confirm the license is active and in the right profession. A legitimate program names its providers and is happy for you to check.

Online vs. in-person prescribing

| | Online visit | In-person visit | |---|---|---| | Evaluation | Detailed health questionnaire, review and messaging | Face-to-face history and exam | | Labs | Ordered at a local lab when needed | Often drawn in office | | Speed | Often reviewed within 1–2 days | Depends on appointment availability | | Follow-up | Messaging and scheduled check-ins | Return visits | | Medication | Shipped from a licensed pharmacy | Filled at a local pharmacy |

When an in-person visit is better

Online care is not ideal for everyone. Your provider may recommend in-person care if you have uncontrolled medical conditions, need a physical exam, take several medications that require close monitoring, or have symptoms that need urgent evaluation. A good telehealth program will tell you when that is the safer path.

Red flags to avoid

  • No medical questions before checkout.
  • "Research use only" or "not for human consumption" products.
  • No named, licensed provider you can look up.
  • No pharmacy information on your label.
  • Promises of guaranteed results.

Brand-name vs. compounded medication

Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide) are FDA-approved for chronic weight management. Compounded semaglutide and tirzepatide are prepared by licensed pharmacies for individual patients; compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are not identical to brand-name products. Ask your provider which option is appropriate for you.

Your privacy online

Telehealth practices handle protected health information and must follow HIPAA. Use the practice's secure portal rather than email or social media to share health details, and be wary of any site that does not explain how it protects your information.

The bottom line

Online prescribing is legitimate when a licensed provider in your state actually evaluates you. If you're in Florida or New York, you can start a free assessment — no payment is required unless you're approved.
